One of the greatest times as an author is connecting with your readers. Recently I had the opportunity to do that in Lititz Springs Park in Lititz, Pennsylvania for a book signing for my story "Our Two Maries" in the newest Chicken Soup for the Soul Book: The Dog Really Did That? Our fur babies are sometimes part therapist and part friend, but always a welcome a sight at the end of a long day. They listen to our problems and plop their heads in our lap and sometimes they come to our aid -- physically, emotionally, and mentally as was the case in my story.
A big thank you to all who came out and shared your dog stories with me. It was a fun evening.

Tomorrow is the Twitter Party Launch for the new Chicken Soup book, "The Dog Really Did That?" My story is titled "Two Marines," and I'm honored to be part of this series as all the royalities go to the Humane League.
Many folks want to know my secret for getting a Chicken Soup story published and I've actually written an ebook on the subject which you can buy on Amazon.com titled "Secrets to Writing A Chicken Soup Story."
Just remember it's always best to submit your story early because your chances are better as they edit stories as they come in. So if you wait until the last minute, they may have ten stories on the theme of "my dog is my best friend" -- for example. It's always best to submit early, so you can have the best chance for acceptance.
And most importantly, keep trying. Just because your story wasn't accepted doesn't mean your story wasn't excellent; it probably means they had too many stories on the same subject. Never give up and keep on submitting.

I've often been asked how I got started in writing and it's simple. I submitted a story and it got accepted. That was the beginning. There seems to be a "rumor" out there that you have to be published to be published. Frankly, I don't know who made that up, but I've heard it over and over again at writer's conferences and it's simply not true.
Here's the truth: If you're a good writer, an editor will take notice (whether you've been published before or not). If you're trying to build your portfolio, then start a blog, offer to write a newsletter for your favorite organization, and submit something to your local newspaper. It doesn't have to be the New York Times!
One trend I do see with more publishers is the marketing aspect. Some say that 80% of writing is marketing; yes, it is true. But I personally have never felt the need because I write for niche markes. That being said, the minimum that you should have is: a blog, website, twitter handle Other options are a podcast, Instagram account, and Facebook.
The old saying that great writing will get you in the door and marketing will push you through is more relevant today than it was ten years ago.
Keep writing, keep submitting, and never give up!
